Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer has been struggling to win the respect of his players, according to “sources.”
Urban Meyer Can’t Win Back the Jacksonville Jaguars Locker Room’s Respect Because He Never Had It in the First Place, According to ‘Sources’.
Because of the much greater Jon Gruden controversy, the Urban Meyer story has faded from the top pages in recent days. Now that Gruden has left, the focus of the next coach fired observers has shifted back to Meyer. While most of the emphasis on Meyer’s predicament has been on whether he can reclaim the respect of the Jacksonville Jaguars locker room, a new report claims that this is impossible since he never had it in the first place.

When an NFL team (or any team, for that matter) confronts significant hardship, like the Jacksonville Jaguars experienced last week, it has the potential to either energize or destroy the club’s spirit. The early results from last Sunday suggested that the former was the case. The scoreboard, however, indicated the latter towards the conclusion of the game.
For Urban Meyer’s team, the game got off to a bad start. The Tennessee Titans returned the ball for a touchdown after tight end Dan Arnold (acquired in a trade with the Carolina Panthers following Week 3) coughed up the ball only seconds into the game.
Trevor Lawrence and the rest of the crew, on the other hand, reacted with vigor. The No. 1 overall selection led the offense down the field and into the end zone for a touchdown (although K Randy Bullock missed the point after).
Lawrence led a drive to tie the game at 14-13 after Derrick Henry scored to put the Titans ahead 14-6. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, it would be their closest call.
Jacksonville’s hopes were dashed when Tennessee scored 23 of the next 29 points, including 17 unanswered, to drop their record to 0-5.
According to sources, the former college coach was never respected by his players.

Shad Khan, the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, issued a statement on Jaguars.com shortly after the Urban Meyer controversy broke, expressing faith in his head coach but saying that he must “regain our trust and respect.”
Numerous allegations have surfaced since the controversy emerged claiming the Jaguars players were openly ridiculing and laughing at the beleaguered head coach. These allegations make it difficult to believe Meyer will be able to “regain” his teammates’ trust.
According to a recent story from The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, Meyer may never be able to “regain” respect in his locker room since he never had any to begin with:
According to sources close to many players, the coach never had access to the dressing room. Meyer’s tough coaching approach hasn’t resonated as well with veterans as it does with college players.
Jeff Howe of The Athletic weighs in on the Urban Meyer saga.
It’s not unusual for college coaches to make the transition to the NFL. Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino, Steve Spurrier, and Lou Holtz are just a few of the NFL head coaches whose college methods failed to transfer.
Aside from failing to adjust to the professionals, all of these coaches had one thing in common: they didn’t stay long in the NFL. Saban and Spurrier barely lasted two seasons, while Petrino and Holtz didn’t last a single season.
Meyer and the Jaguars aren’t getting any easier as they prepare for their next game in London.
Urban Meyer and the Jaguars aren’t getting any rest in Week 6. Only a few days after losing to the Titans, the squad had to board an aircraft and traverse the Atlantic Ocean. This weekend, the Jaguars will face the Miami Dolphins in London, England.
The Dolphins aren’t exactly setting the football world on fire either, with a 1-4 record so far in 2021. According to rumors, the club may be able to reclaim starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, which may assist the case.
The Jaguars, on the other hand, have the most international experience in the NFL. From 2013 to 2019, the squad spent seven years in London, only halting last season because to COVID-19-related travel limitations.
Meyer and the majority of the current roster were not part of the streak, despite their institutional experience.
The coaches’ ability to manage the week leading up to the NFL’s London games is crucial to their success. If “sources” are accurate and Meyer no longer or never had his players’ respect, the Jacksonville Jaguars may be in for a lengthy weekend in the United Kingdom.
Meyer will finally get a week off next week, as the Jaguars have a bye. If he returns with the squad, that is.
